Dorothy Height was born in Richmond Virginia. She was raised in Idaho, Pennysylvania. She graduated from Rankin High School in 1929. She received scholarships in college. She was accepted into Barnard College but was denied entrance when she arrived due to the color of her skin, and being as though, the school had a rule only allowing two Black students per year, she could not attend.
